Through a generous gift by Joseph Powell and his wife, Ann, the Ann L. and Joseph H. Powell Library was established March 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. The 2,000-square-foot consumer library contains books, periodicals, DVDs and other educational materials on a variety of health-related topics. In addition, the library features a meeting room complete with video teleconferencing.
“Things change so quickly in the medical field,” Ann Powell said. “We wanted to offer a gift that would benefit Baptist now and in the future.”
Human relationships, how you relate to others and setting an example have certainly been guiding principles for Powell, who continues to put his stamp on Baptist Memorial Health Care and who left guideposts for others to blaze their trail.
Born in Etowah, Tenn., the youngest of nine children, Powell was president of Baptist Memorial Hospital from 1980 to 1994 and president of Baptist Memorial Health Care System from 1981 to 1994.
During that time, Baptist experienced unprecedented expansion from a single hospital in downtown Memphis to a health care system that featured 32 health care related subsideries, 15 of which are hospitals serving West Tennessee, North Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas.
And during that time of growth, Powell epitomized the blending of Baptist’s three-fold mission of Christ and the expansion of services across the Mid-South, where everyone could have access to technologically advanced care from the best medical staffs available.
Powell also was president during the formation of the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Baptist system, allowing each facility to benefit with resources to purchase new technologies and implement innovative programs, as well as providing means for enhancing patient care.
“The Foundation gave us the opportunity to raise money so we could have the ability to support our mission,” Powell said. “Our donors support our mission to do good.”
The belief in that mission is furthered by donors such as Powell and his wife, Ann, who gave a substantial gift for the new library at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis that will bear their name.
