When Baptist Memorial Hospital-Medical Center's Physicians and Surgeons building opened in 1928, it was the first hospital building in the nation to offer so many conveniences and features under roof. The unique design plan was used by hospitals throughout the nation. The nine-story addition replaced the hospital's original entrance on Madison, an ornate, 46-step winding staircase.
The building provided office space for doctors, a retail pharmacy, cafe, barber shop, beauty shop, hotel rooms and gift shop, as well as 100 more patient beds. The pharmacy, cafe, beauty shop and barber shop were on the first floor. Five floors were used as doctors' offices for rent. Patient rooms were on two floors, and the ninth floor housed hotel rooms for patients' families and outpatients. These amenities helped the medical staff attract patients from "virtually everywhere," according to a hospital newsletter archives.
The building connected with every floor of the hospital, allowing for close clinical supervision of patients. The Physicians and Surgeons building changed the character of Baptist Memorial Hospital from a community institution to a regional referral center for the tri-state area. The first hospital-owned physicians' office building in the nation, it established a physician-hospital relationship that aided in attracting world-renowned physicians to Baptist.
