The Memphis Bioworks Foundation is in the process of building the UT-Baptist Research Park, which will ultimately consist of 1.2 million square feet of laboratory space located on the site of the former Baptist Memorial Hospital-Medical Center. Baptist Memorial Health Care donated the site to the University of Tennessee in 2001 for this purpose.
Housing research activities for multiple tenants, the first phase of development of the UT-Baptist Research Park is a dedicated, six story, 165,000 sqare foot world-class biotechnology research facility. The Research Park will include an incubation program to develop new business in biotechnology and foster creation of new jobs. The new campus will integrate the most current research, teaching and biomedical development.
While its primary function will be to serve as a center of development for the future of the biomedical industry, the economic benefits the UT-Baptist Research Park will bring to Memphis are significant. The Memphis Bioworks Foundation projects new investment of over $1 billion will result from this effort. In addition, it will help create thousands of higher paying jobs and a strengthened academic program in science at secondary two-year and four-year schools.
The Research Park will also be home to the State of Tennessee’s first Charter School, the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, which houses grades 7 through 12. The school is dedicated to high academic standards and student achievement that will make it not only a community centerpiece but also a reform model for other public schools thoughout the country-and one more reason for biotech industries to locate and prosper in Memphis.
