Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto’s cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to help people with cardiovascular illnesses, including coronary artery disease, heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, people who have had angioplasties, stents, heart valve surgery or repair and heart transplants.

Do you think outpatient cardiac rehabilitation is for you?
Please answer these questions and find out:

  • Have you been diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease?
  • Have you recently had a heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery or angioplasty and stents?
  • Do you wish you had more energy and felt better?
  • Do you want to learn more about the disease process, what your role is and how to prevent future cardiovascular events?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, consider discussing cardiac rehabilitation with your physician and/or call cardiac rehab for more information. Come join the fun and get back into life!
Baptist’s cardiac rehabilitation program offers:
  • Medically supervised exercise
  • Education regarding cardiovascular illnesses and the disease process. Cardiac rehabilitation staff teach disease management to help modify risk factors, including stress.
  • Opportunity to meet with dietitians and pharmacists, as needed, for individualized counseling
  • Social interaction with other people who have cardiovascular illnesses

Specifics of the Programs
  • Program length depends on individual needs and goals.
  • Physician referral is a requirement.
  • Exercise sessions are three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and last about an hour.
  • Medicare and many insurance companies may pay for cardiac rehabilitation; however, patients should confer with their individual insurance company.

The goal of cardiac rehabilitation is to return individuals, regardless of their disease process, to the level of physiological, psychological, social and emotional functioning they enjoyed before cardiovascular disease. Staff members actively promote patients’ independence and encourage people to assume responsibility for their own risk factor modification and goal setting.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Staff
Cardiac rehabilitation staff consists of nurses and exercise specialists, along with other health care professionals, such as dietitians and physical therapists, when appropriate.

Equipment
  • Treadmills
  • Stationary bikes
  • Nu Steps-a machine that works the arms and legs without putting weight on the knees
  • Arm ergometer- a machine that works the upper body and increases cardiovascular circulation
  • Hand weights
