Health Tip
Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. Your body needs 40 - 50 different nutrients daily, and no one food provides all of them. Use the Food Guide Pyramid (found on many food containers) and Nutrition Facts food labels as a guide for your individual daily needs.

Daily Bread
Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Colossians 3:12

Programs for patients recovering from neurological injuries or joint replacements

Next Step at Baptist Rehab-Germantown was designed to give Memphis-area patients an important new rehab option — an inpatient level of intensity in an outpatient setting. The goal was for those who had suffered a stroke or some other traumatic injury to reach a desired level of independence as soon as possible.

Now we have added a similar program for patients who have had hip and knee replacements. Next Step: Total Joint Program allows us to evaluate patients in their acute care facility so there is no lapse between discharge and joining the program. More importantly, it means Baptist Rehab-Germantown now has a reliable continuum of care for the orthopedic patient.

How long do these programs last?
Next Step
On average, people attend Next Step for about four weeks, 3-5 days per week for 2-3 hours per day.

Next Step: Total Joint Program
The Total Joint Program is a one-week program requiring 3-5 hours of therapy and education per day.

In general, the following criteria must be met for you to continue participating in either program:
  • You must need multiple hours of skilled therapy each day. Skilled means that a family member or unlicensed person is not qualified to safely conduct the activities you need.
  • You must show a willingness to actively participate in the program. This means keeping appointments, arriving on time, and being involved in activities while you are here.
  • You must have the potential to make functional gains that are measurable.

What should I expect to achieve?
Ultimate goals vary according to the individual, but in general, Next Step strives to achieve the following:
  • Less dependence on others for care and decision making
  • Ability to manage own care
  • Participation in life to the extent you desire
  • Successful return to work or school
  • Knowledge and skills to maintain the gains made in the program

If you have questions about the Next Step programs, please contact our Next Step manager at 901-757-3426.
