Health Tip
When dining out and waiting for your food to arrive, make good use of your time: read a book, write a note, or bring along work from the office.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!
Proverbs 16:16

Baptist Lauderdale's Senior Care is a mental health inpatient program designed to meet the behavioral health care needs of people at least 55 years of age. The program includes individualized assessments and treatment planning, therapeutic daily activities, and comprehensive discharge planning.

Warning Signs
Warning signs that may indicate the need for treatment include:
  • Disorientation
  • Depression
  • Severe memory loss
  • Hallucinations
  • Increased social withdrawal
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Extreme weight fluctuations
  • Loss of interest in appearance

If you or someone you care for exhibits any of these symptoms, you don’t have to suffer alone. A confidential source of help is available 24 hours a day by calling 731-221-2500.

Admissions Process

Physicians, health care professionals, and family members may call 731-221-2500 to refer someone to Senior Care. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Referred patients are evaluated by a Senior Care professional to determine whether the program is appropriate for them. This confidential preadmission screening is free and may be conducted in the patient’s home, at a nursing care center or at the hospital.

If deemed appropriate, the person is admitted by a licensed staff physician and then assessed by a psychiatrist for treatment.

Treatment Program
Senior Care treats patients with depression, bipolar disorder, dementia, acute psychoses, and adjustment disorders associated with aging. We tailor an individualized treatment program for each patient.

A variety of approaches are used, including group therapy, individual therapy, and family counseling. We also provide specialty treatments such as recreational therapy.

Professional Staff and Support
Our multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, social workers, activity therapists, psychiatric nurses, and registered dietitians. Primary care physicians are also an active part of the medical management team.

Patients’ family members are key participants in the treatment process and are encouraged to participate in family conferences and discharge planning. Family involvement helps ensure that patients continue using the new skills they learn in the program.

Insurance Coverage
Medicare and most commercial and supplemental health insurance plans cover the majority of our Senior Care services for patients who qualify.

General Admission Criteria
Senior Care is designed for people who:
  • Are 55 and older and will benefit from short-term inpatient care
  • Suffer from severe depression
  • Experience an acute onset of hallucinations or delusions
  • Do not comply with their prescribed mental health regimen
  • May pose a potential hazard to their own health or life
  • Experience an acute onset of inability to cope with stress or attend to daily activities
  • May need to start taking or change their use of psychotropic drugs, or any drug that can affect the mind, emotions, and behavior
