Hospital Firsts

  • First in the MidSouth to perform the cardiomyoplasty procedure, during which skeletal muscles are taken from a patient's back or abdomen and wrapped around an ailing heart. The added muscle, aided by ongoing stimulation from a device similar to a pacemaker, may boost the heart’s pumping motion
  • First in Tennessee to discharge a patient home with the HeartMate® Vented Electric Ventricular Assist Device, a device that does the work of the heart when patients’ hearts are too weak to function properly.
  • First in the Mid-South to provide Abiomed, a device used to assist the heart so that it can rest, heal and recover its function.
  • First in the Memphis area to provide intensity modulated radiation therapy
  • First in Memphis to have a freestanding radiation oncology center
  • First in Memphis to provide prostate brachytherapy, a nonsurgical way to treat prostate cancer.
  • First in the Memphis area to provide a cancer navigator to assist cancer patients
  • First in the Mid-South to perform a total joint replacement using ceramic-on-ceramic prosthesis
  • Tennessee’s only blood bank designated as an American Association of Blood Bank Immunohematology Refererence Laboratory and one of only 53 in the U.S.
  • First hospital to provide funding for 12-lead EKGs to be performed in ambulances by emergency medical technicians. 12-lead EKGs allow doctors to observe the heart’s electrical activity from 12 different angles, providing them with more information about heart attack patients before they arrive at the hospital.


Hospital Awards

  • Preferred provider in the community for 12 years in a row, according to the National Research Corp.
  • Earned a Tennessee Improving Patient Safety award from the Tennessee Department of Health, in conjunction with the Tennessee Improving Patient Safety State Advisory Committee in 2004. The award was given for the hospital’s Medical Response Team project, which established a process for early intervention and treatment of critically ill patients. The project resulted in better outcomes for these patients.
  • Named one of U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 hospitals for orthopedics in 2000, 2001 and 2002
  • Named one of the nation’s top integrated health care networks by Verispan Marketing Group in 2002 and 2003.
  • Earned a Clean Air Award from the National Air Filtration Association in 2001
