This heart procedure, a nonsurgical alternative to bypass surgery, treats blood vessels that reclog after balloon angioplasty and stent placement. Research trials have shown that the use of very small doses of radiation delivered directly to the clogged stent site significantly decreases the need for additional procedures. Cardiovascular brachytherapy adds only 10 minutes to angioplasty, and no radiation remains in the body. Baptist Memphis employs a team approach. In addition to the interventional cardiologist and cath lab staff, the team includes a radiation physicist who monitors the safety and accurate calculation of the radiation dose, as well as a radiation oncologist who delivers the radiation.

Cardiovascular Brachytherapy Highlights

  • Beta radiation penetrates just a few millimeters into body tissues, resulting in minimal radiation exposure to the treatment site and no exposure to healthy tissue.
  • The radiation source remains in the body only three to five minutes and is completely withdrawn when the treatment is complete.
  • The procedure takes only about 10 minutes longer than angioplasty.
  • Cardiovascular brachytherapy has been shown to reduce the incidence of reclogging by 66 percent, with an overall 34 percent reduction in the need for additional procedures.
