The health care experience can be very frightening and stressful for children and their families. Often, children struggle with issues such as separation, loss, fear of the unknown, anticipation of pain, or loss of control and independence. Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis’ child life program can enhance a child and family’s ability to cope while minimizing the stresses of the health care experience through medical play, play therapy, free play, preoperative teaching, procedure education, social interaction, distractions or support during medical procedures.
Our child life specialists are available in pediatric areas throughout the hospital. They play a vital role in the pediatric emergency department, Hardin Pediatric Center, Baptist Ambulatory Centre and P.D.’s Perch (pediatric outpatient center). The following services are provided by Baptist’s child life specialists:
Medical Play
Medical play can help children become familiar with the hospital environment and address any concerns or questions they may have about medical procedures or the reasons for their hospital visit. Baptist’s child life specialists will use medical play to help children adjust to the health care setting.
Preparation
Baptist’s child life specialists can help prepare your children for medical procedures or even surgery through preoperative teaching, age-appropriate education or play therapy.
Support During Procedures
Whenever possible, Baptist’s child life specialists will accompany children during medical procedures to provide support and help them cope.
