Lap-Band®, gastric bypass, and other surgical weight-loss options
With obesity becoming an epidemic nationwide and in Memphis, more people are looking to surgery for help with obesity problems. Baptist Memphis offers a number of bariatric or weight-loss options, including Lap-Band®, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery, as well as other bariatric surgery options.
The Pros and Cons of Weight Loss Surgery
Bariatric surgeon Dr. George Woodman discusses the bariatric surgery process on WKNO-TV's Smart Medicine program.
Am I a candidate for weight-loss surgery?
To be a candidate for weight-loss or bariatric surgery, a patient must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the overweight or obese range. BMI is the height-to-weight ratio of an individual and is determined by a mathematical formula. A BMI of 25-29.9 indicates an individual is overweight. A BMI of 30 or greater indicates an individual is obese.
How do I learn more about my surgical weight-loss options?
If your BMI is 25 or higher, the Baptist Weight Loss Center encourages you to attend a free education seminar hosted at Baptist Memphis. Reservations are not required. For more information, please call (901) 226-LOSE (5673) or email regina.rogers@bmhcc.org.
What about non-surgical weight-loss options?
Bariatric surgery is not the only way to lose weight. The Baptist Weight Loss Center offers Renew: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for both adults and teens whose BMI is 25 or higher.
