Baptist Coordinates Coverage for Cardiovascular Surgery Services
Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi has partnered with the Cardiovascular Surgery Group in Memphis to coordinate temporary coverage in Oxford. The surgeons travel to Baptist North Mississippi one to two days each week to provide backup support for the cardiologist, who performs angioplasty and stent procedures. The coverage will help ensure patients get safe, high-quality care.
The clinic and the hospital administration are working together to recruit a full-time heart surgeon who would live in Oxford and either be a member or an affiliate of the Memphis group. The hospital is also working with cardiologist Steve Purdon, M.D., to attract more cardiologists to Oxford.

New Acute Rehab Unit Opens September 18
Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi has opened its new $2.5 million Acute Rehabilitation Unit and accepted its first patients.
The 9,000-square-foot facility features 13 beds specifically for rehab patients, a custom gymnasium outfitted with innovative equipment, as well as a fully functional kitchen and laundry unit designed to retrain basic living skills using real-world scenarios.
The acute rehab facility is the first of its kind in the area. Before the facility at Baptist North Mississippi opened, patients requiring acute inpatient rehabilitation services typically would have to travel to Memphis or Jackson to receive treatment. For patients who were unwilling or unable to travel, that often meant settling for a level of care that was inadequate for specific rehab needs, according to Niles Norris, Baptist North Mississippi’s director of rehabilitation services.
The new Acute Rehabilitation Unit employs a multidisciplinary team approach to treatment, using the expertise of a physiatrist (a medical doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation), rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, a recreational therapist, a social worker, as well as other specialists.
After a patient’s condition is fully assessed, the team creates a care plan that addresses the patient’s short and long-range goals. The ultimate goal is to prepare the patient for independent living in their home or a homelike environment.
