Baptist Donates $10,000 Toward Oxford High School Practice Facility
Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi recently donated $10,000 to the Oxford High School Baseball Parents that will help pay for the construction of an indoor practice facility. The gift will more than double the current amount raised by the group.

The facility will include batting cages, coaches’ offices, an equipment room, a storeroom and possibly player locker rooms. Currently the team dresses in a converted shop building on the eastern boundary of campus and the team loses many practice opportunities because inclement weather.

Baptist will partner with the OHS coaching staff to provide ongoing educational programs for student athletes on topics such as recovering from a sports injury, maintaining a healthy diet and proper stretching techniques.

The parents need approximately $100,000 to create a top-notch facility, according to Johnny Barrett, fund-raising chair. Fund-raising efforts are under way and will include corporate sponsorships, individual donations and special events.

Granite personalized blocks selling for $500 will create a wall beside the new facility, and individual “Player Bricks” can be purchased for $100. A “Player’s Walkway” will lead from the stadium entrance gate to the home team’s dugout.

For more information or to make a donation, please contact Johnny Barrett at 234-2821 or Coach Brian Harvey at 232-2864.

Patient Simulation Lab Provides Hands-on Educational Opportunities for Baptist North Mississippi Physicians and Staff
Baptist North Mississippi is home to a patient simulation lab designed to provide nurses, pharmacists, physicians, respiratory therapists and other health care team members the opportunity to learn new skills and procedures and practice and enhance their current skills in a controlled setting.

The lab features SimMan, a mannequin that looks, feels and sounds just like a human. He speaks, breathes and even has a heart beat. The simulator is programmed to enact a multitude of critical care scenarios. SimMan has been described as “medicine’s answer to a flight simulator.”

Simulation gives excellent educational and clinical skill support in a controlled setting. SimMan is designed to give hands-on experience to support safe, patient-centered care in a non-threatening environment.

Baptist Offers Diagnostic Heart Test at Reduced Price
During the month of February, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi is offering HeartScore™ – a test that can detect heart disease before symptoms appear – at a reduced cost of $99.

Recent research has shown a direct correlation between the amount of calcium in the coronary arteries and the likelihood of a future heart attack. HeartScore, or coronary calcium scoring, is a special noninvasive computerized tomography scan of the heart that measures the amount of calcium in the coronary arteries. The amount and density of the calcium determine the calculation of a calcium score. HeartScore is appropriate for men and women, ages 40 to 70, with certain risk factors. The regular price of HeartScore was recently reduced to $169.

Patients must provide the name of a physician who can receive the results of their HeartScore test.
