 Baptist North Mississippi Donates $44,000 to Northwest Mississippi Community College Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi will give $44,651 to Northwest Mississippi Community College to help the college continue its associate degree program for surgical technicians. A grant from the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation in 2002 allowed Baptist North Mississippi and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany, Miss., to give a $100,000 grant to Northwest to help the school reinstate the associate degree program. Surgical technicians assist surgeons in the operating room, setting up and maintaining a sterile environment and passing appropriate instruments to physicians during surgery. They must know the names and purposes of surgical instruments, anatomy and physiology, the principles of sterilization and how to sterilize instruments. Students will have classroom instruction at Northwest and then complete clinical training at a hospital during their first year in the program. After finishing the first year, they will receive a certificate of completion. Students who choose to pursue an associate degree can take core classes in English, math and other basic subjects during their second year. The goal of the program is to graduate eight to 10 students a year. Baptist North Mississippi Named Top Ten Employer The Delta Business Journal named Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi one of Oxford’s “Top Ten Employers.” Baptist North Mississippi is a 217-bed hospital that serves a 12-county market. More than 70 percent of the hospital’s patients live outside Lafayette County, creating an economic impact of more than $37.8 million on the local economy. The second largest employer in the county, Baptist North Mississippi employs nearly 1,000 health care professionals and has more than 80 physicians on its medical staff.  Top of Page |
