Panhellenic Council Donates Funds To Baptist Cancer Program
Now that the donations have been counted, the sore feet and worn out shoe leather were well worth it.
On Thursday, the University of Mississippi Panhellenic Council presented a $12,000 check to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi's Center for Cancer Care.
The funds were raised during the second annual C.A.R.E. Walk sponsored by the Panhellenic Council. C.A.R.E. is an acronym for cancer awareness, research and eradication. This year's fund-raiser walk topped last year’s results attracting more than 1,100 participants and generating just under $17,500 to promote cancer awareness and education.
“Baptist is so grateful to these young women for the hard work they put into this event,” said Sarah Hollis, director of marketing and physician relations at Baptist North Mississippi. “Last year we used their generous donation to create a cancer resource room for our patients, family members and the community. We’ll work with our Cancer Advisory Board to determine the best use of the funds in a way that will directly impact our patients.”
The Panhellenic Council is the governing body over the nine national social sororities at Ole Miss. They organize formal recruitment in the fall as well as philanthropy, educational, social and scholarship events. Julie Gerecke, Panhellenic graduate assistant, serves as an advisor for the executive council and for all the sorority presidents and members on campus.
"The money goes to benefit the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi's cancer program," Gerecke said. "Although Panhellenic Council does organize and carryout many fund-raisers in a year, the C.A.R.E. Walk is our biggest event. All of the money stays in the community.”
Baptist North Mississippi’s Center for Cancer Care recently received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. This prestigious commendation establishes a set of nationally recognized criteria that only the most comprehensive centers can attain. Baptist North Mississippi is one of the only two accredited cancer centers in the northern half of Mississippi.
Physicians at Baptist treated 556 cancer patients last year with the top sites being prostate, breast, lung and colorectal. Cancer education programs, reduced rate screenings and initiatives like the Cancer Navigator Nurse are designed to increase cancer prevention and early detection.
