Bringing Quality Cancer Care Closer to Home
By Zach Chandler, administrator and CEO, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi

For more than a decade, patients have been able to rely on Baptist North Mississippi for cancer care. In our ongoing effort to provide the highest level of cancer care possible, we have added new technology, medical staff, treatment options and enhanced services for our patients. As a result, we have seen an enormous growth in the program.

Our accreditation from the American College of Surgeons is evidence of the great strides we have made in bringing quality cancer care to Oxford. Today, North Mississippi residents have a comprehensive, advanced cancer program that offers superior customer service.

Some of the services we now provide include:
  • Nurses certified by the Oncology Nursing Society to administer chemotherapy
  • Cancer navigator/nurse available as a comprehensive resource for patients
  • Cancer Resource Room for patients, family and the community
  • A streamlined diagnostic and treatment process at our Center for Breast Health
  • Radioactive seed implants for prostate cancer provides a treatment option with few side effects and a quicker recovery time for the patient.
  • High-dose rate brachytherapy for cervical cancer provides a less invasive treatment procedure and a quicker recovery time for the patient.
  • Radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors provides a non-surgical, mildly painless option for patients
  • Breast conservation therapy with the delivery of partial breast irradiation (Mammosite®)
  • Full-time onsite positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, which can detect diseases weeks and months before symptoms appear
  • Filmless picture archiving and communications systems (PACS)
  • Computer-assisted detection — a “second look” program that complements the radiologist’s interpretation of mammogram films
  • Weekly cancer conferences where physicians present and discuss cancer cases, giving their patients second and third opinions on their conditions
  • Genetic counseling services

We value the years of support our physicians and clinical staff have given to the Baptist Centers for Cancer Care-North Mississippi. It is exciting for me to see patients who can stay close to their homes, families and friends while still receiving the same high level of care they would receive in larger metropolitan areas.

100,000 Lives Campaign Exceeds Target
By Betty Tolbert, Quality Review, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi

According to an Institute for Healthcare Improvement report, the 3,000 U.S. hospitals participating in the 100,000 Lives Campaign exceeded the program’s established goals by collectively saving 122,300 lives! We at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi are committed to continue enhancing the excellence of care delivered to our patients through compliance with the IHI project interventions.

These interventions include:
  • Medical response team activation at the first sign that a patient’s condition is worsening
  • Perfect care for heart attack patients
  • Accurate and complete medication reconciliation
  • Prevention of central line infections
  • Prevention of surgical site infections
  • Prevention of ventilator-acquired infections

We recently initiated multidisciplinary rounds to assist us in quickly instituting evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes. The team was formed as a way to provide better patient care, promote patient safety, and improve patient satisfaction. Disciplines include quality, case management, infection control, respiratory, nutrition and pharmacy.

Each day, the team reviews the patient’s chart to help ensure that all the core measures criteria, or scientifically-sound practices, are met, including criteria for bundles, or small sets of practices that, when performed collectively and reliably, have been proven to improve patient outcomes. The team also visits the patient briefly to evaluate compliance with these measures. This is a new effort, so roles are still evolving. The process is in place in ICU step-down, with plans to expand throughout the hospital.
