Baptist North Mississippi Opens New Skills Lab

On Tuesday, May 9, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi hosted a grand opening celebration for its new clinical laboratory/classroom. The facility, which was made possible through a $325,000 grant from the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation, allows nursing students to learn and develop clinical skills in a controlled setting.

The lab/classroom has been fitted with patient simulation equipment and will allow educators to create realistic patient care situations to help nursing and other health care students learn and develop clinical skills in a classroom setting. It is also a resource for nursing staff to practice and assess their skills. Baptist North Mississippi and the University of Mississippi School of Nursing will share the facility.

During the grand opening, staff demonstrated how to operate the lab’s simulation equipment, including SimMan® – a realistic, anatomically accurate mannequin used to train health care workers – and Cath Sim® Vascular Access Simulator – a device used for intravenous procedure training. In addition, attendees received information about Baptist’s clinical documentation program – a multiyear project that will move Baptist closer to a paperless environment.

“This was a very exciting day for us and our entire community,” said Zach Chandler, administrator and CEO of Baptist North Mississippi. “This lab/classroom will enhance the education of future health care workers and allow current health care professionals to more easily refresh their skills. As a result, nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other staff will be better prepared to care for patients in North Mississippi.”

In 2004, Baptist Memorial Health Care and North Mississippi Medical Center agreed to provide joint funding for a nursing program at the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford. The program is designed to recruit more students to the nursing profession and to make it possible to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing on the Oxford campus. The second phase of the program provides an accelerated Master of Science in nursing program for students who do not have a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Baptist North Mississippi Celebrates Its Volunteers

Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi hosted a luncheon on May 5 for all its volunteers in appreciation of their service to the hospital and patients. All volunteers were presented with a gift as a token of appreciation for all they do.

“Our volunteers work so hard, and we consider them part of our hospital family,” said Lila Herren, Baptist North Mississippi’s patient representative. “They play such an important role, and we want them to know we truly appreciate them.”

Baptist volunteers perform many tasks, including working at the information desk; delivering mail, flowers and magazines; stocking waiting rooms with snacks for visitors; and reading to patients. They also transport patients, work in offices and help with paperwork. Experience Critical volunteers, a nontraditional volunteer corps made up mostly of college students who want to pursue health care careers, work in the emergency department to make families and patients more comfortable, give updates and assist staff.

Baptist North Mississippi Introduces Medication Safety Campaign

Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi recently introduced a community and patient education campaign about the importance of medication records.

Baptist’s campaign theme, “What You Write Could Save Your Life,” highlights the value of keeping a record of all medications – including prescribed, over-the-counter and herbal. Additionally, earlier this year Baptist emphasized this message, along with the importance of keeping this record with you at all times, in radio public service announcements, print ads and on Baptist’s Web site, www.baptistonline.org. A printable version of the medication record also is still available there.

“Patient Safety Awareness Week was a great time for us to introduce our medication safety campaign,” said Zach Chandler, administrator and CEO of Baptist North Mississippi. “The importance of having this information with you at all times was demonstrated following the hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast last year. We hope this campaign will help protect members of our community, enhance the quality of their hospital experiences and prepare them for any situation that might occur.”

Baptist introduced the medication safety campaign during Patient Safety Awareness Week, which was March 5 through 11. The week is part of a national education and awareness-building campaign for enhancing patient care at the local level. This year’s theme is “Our Patients – Our Partners: One Team, One Goal.”

Baptist North Mississippi Receives Award For Breast Feeding Program

Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi recently received the Mississippi Breastfeeding Coalition’s fifth annual Mississippi Hospital Breastfeeding award. Lactation consultant and educator Kathy Shoalmire accepted the award at the “Breastfeeding: The Gold Standard” award luncheon. Baptist North Mississippi is the first hospital in the northern part of the state to be selected for this honor.

The coalition began the Mississippi Hospital Breastfeeding Award program to recognize hospitals that have been doing an exceptional job in expanding breast feeding promotion and support programs during the past two years.

Beginning in 2003, Baptist North Mississippi increased the educational opportunities for expectant and new mothers by, among other things, hosting a special class with emphasis on a family approach to breast feeding. A breast feeding support group meets bimonthly to lend support and encouragement. In addition, nursing leadership placed special attention on breast feeding during new nurse orientations and in-service trainings for clinical staff. Baptist North Mississippi’s Women’s Pavilion created the Breastfeeding Resource Center in 2005, and it is thriving.

“When they are discharged from the hospital, new mothers are given appointments to return to the resource center for a free follow-up breast feeding assessment,” Shoalmire said. “Also, our lactation specialists and the pediatricians who work at Baptist enjoy a great working relationship, and they partner to help make sure new moms and their infants get the care and support they need.

The Mississippi Breastfeeding Coalition is a nonprofit organization established to encourage and support the promotion of a healthier Mississippi through breast feeding. For more information, please visit www.msbfc.org.
