Lymphedema
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich lymph fluid in the tissue. This can be caused by removal of lymph nodes after surgery for breast cancer, radiation, infection, trauma, a congenital malformation or ineffective lymphatic system.

A board certified therapist trained in lymphedema therapy can help patients reduce the swelling and pain of the condition.

Complete decongestive therapy treatment for lymphedema includes:
  • Manual lymph drainage—superficial skin stretch technique to reroute lymph fluid
  • Skin care
  • Bandaging to provide compression for fluid reduction
  • Therapeutic exercises performed with the bandages in place

Treatment is usually ordered for five times a week for two to four weeks. After you have reached your target limb size, you will be fitted for a compression garment to be worn during the day.

Edema
A board certified therapist trained in lymphedema and edema therapy can help patients reduce the swelling and pain of lower extremity edema.

Edema is a localized or general condition in which body tissues contain excessive amounts of fluid. The venous system is overloaded and cannot move all of the fluid back into circulation. Common causes for lower extremity edema are congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Edema therapy includes:
  • Skin care
  • Various fibrosis techniques may be used, if needed, to break apart fibrous connections
  • Bandaging to provide external compression for fluid reduction

Therapeutic exercises are performed with the bandages in place. Treatment is usually ordered for three times a week for approximately two weeks. After you have reached your target limb size, you will be fitted for a compression garment to be worn during the day.

How can you receive care?
To receive therapy, just ask your physician to order outpatient occupational therapy with emphasis on edema or lymphedema management. Therapy care is reimbursed by most private pay insurance and Medicare. For information on edema therapy and other services at Baptist Outpatient Rehabilitation, please call 662-236-9294.
