Improving quality of life is our No. 1 goal.

The Baptist Restorative Care Hospital's pulmonary rehabilitation program seeks to establish a healthy lifestyle and reduce future hospitalizations for patients with pulmonary diseases. The two-fold program provides the education and information necessary to better manage the pulmonary disease process, and it provides a foundation for a home exercise program that helps maintain and improve physical strength and endurance.

Who is eligible?

Acutely ill patients who require inpatient hospitalization for treatment and are exhibiting the following:

  • Shortness of breath that interferes with daily activities and self-care
  • Repeated hospitalization for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma or other pulmonary disorders

Where can patients be admitted from?

Patients can be admitted from an acute care facility, or they can be admitted directly from the community. SPECIAL NOTE - Patients with an acute increased severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be admitted directly to the Baptist Restorative Care Hospital from an emergency room or from their physician’s office, but their admitting diagnosis must reflect the illness being treated. The Baptist Restorative Care Hospital is well-equipped to care for patients during this phase of illness. Once a physician determines the patient is stable and can actively participate in the pulmonary rehabilitation program, the appropriate order should be written.

Who is involved in the pulmonary rehabilitation program?

The care team consists of a physician, respiratory therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, dietitian and other support services personnel as needed. Physicians are asked to consult a pulmonary physician to assist with patients’ pulmonary needs.

What education is available?

Information about breathing techniques, anxiety management, medication and equipment, energy conservation techniques, exercise information, nutrition concerns, pacing and community resources is available at the Baptist Restorative Care Hospital. The pulmonary rehabilitation program assists patients in regaining some control over their breathing during daily activities. Improving quality of life is our No. 1 goal.
