Baptist Union City hospitalist receives honor
Gerald Stipanuk, M.D., hospitalist at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City, recently received the Excellence in Hospitalist Medicine award from EmCare Inc., an emergency medicine management and hospitalist staffing company. Stipanuk was honored for achieving extraordinarily high core measure compliance in the area of pneumonia.
Hospitalists are specialists dedicated solely to the care of hospitalized patients. They work with primary care physicians to manage the care of patients from the moment they enter the hospital until they are discharged.
Recently, Stipanuk served as guest speaker at the EmCare conference in Fort Worth, Texas, and discussed the importance of teamwork in complying with pneumonia core measures.
“It is a pleasure working with the case managers, nursing staff and ancillary departments at Baptist Union City because they are a highly effective team committed to providing quality patient care,” said Stipanuk.
Stipanuk has been the hospitalist program director at Baptist Union City since the program began in 2006.

Baptist Union City offers more ‘convenient’ registration
All patients who enter Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City, excluding emergencies, are asked to go directly to the admissions department at the main entrance, just off the main lobby now. This includes all radiology patients, who previously registered in the outpatient services department at the south entrance, just off Reelfoot Avenue.
“This change has been made to better serve our patients,” said Gail Baker, admissions and health information management director. “The additional staff and space in the admissions department at the main entrance will further promote timeliness of service and patient convenience.”
The admissions department is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Baptist Union City offers Nurse Camp
Partnering with the University of Tennessee at Martin, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City will offer CRASH Course to ninth, 10th and 11th grade students in Obion and Weakley counties. CRASH Course is a summer day camp that exposes students to the health care industry, primarily nursing. CRASH stands for Creating Real Life Action Super Heroes.
“The goal of CRASH Course is to promote the nursing profession to young people so they select appropriate high school classes and can begin preparing for health care careers,” said James Caldwell, chief nursing officer of Baptist Union City and director of CRASH Course.
During CRASH Course, students will learn about the educational requirements, skills, typical job duties and personal qualities of nurses. Campers participate in interactive, hands-on activities that highlight the skills, equipment, technology and resources used by nurses and other health professionals.
There is no fee to attend the camp, thanks to a donation from the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation.
For more information, please contact James Caldwell at 731-884-8621.
