Baptist Union City earns clinical excellence award

Digital Mammography now available at Baptist Union City

Women now have access to digital technology for their breast cancer screenings

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City now offers digital mammography technology at its Mammography Suite for Women, which opened recently.

Baptist Union City is now one of the few imaging facilities in the area to offer Fuji’s Computed Radiography for Mammography system, developed by FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA Inc.

“Screening mammography is still recognized as the most effective tool available for the early detection of breast cancer,” said Scott Becton, director of radiology at Baptist Union City. “And, according to a recent landmark study, digital mammography offers significant benefits to certain groups of women. We’re proud to be able to provide women sophisticated screening technology to identify cancers early, when they are most treatable.”

Digital mammography, a mammogram that uses new detection technologies and computers instead of film, was found in a landmark clinical study of more than 42,000 women to be better than film-screen mammography in detecting breast cancer in three groups: women younger than 50, pre and perimenopausal women, and women with dense breasts. Digital mammograms are 15 percent more accurate among women younger than 50 or not yet in menopause and 11 percent more accurate among women with dense breasts.

From the patient’s perspective, the procedure for a digital mammogram is the same as for a conventional film mammogram; however, because the images are available almost immediately and no film development time is necessary, the wait time for the patient is shorter.

Baptist Union City also uses a picture archiving and communication system, which enables the digital mammograms to be electronically viewed, transmitted and stored. The system enables the interpreting physician to use digital tools to electronically enhance and magnify the images and to adjust the contrast to better examine any suspicious areas. This reduces the need for the patient to be called back for additional testing. The PACS also facilitates long-distance consultations with other specialists because the digital images can easily be transmitted to other Baptist facilities. They can also be transferred to a CD or film if a patient needs to take them to another facility.

Because of the unique design of Fuji’s digital mammography system, Baptist Union City is able to ensure that every woman scheduled for a breast screening receives a digital mammogram.

“Fuji’s digital mammography system allows us to do our jobs more effectively and efficiently, and, more importantly, enables us to provide a high level of care for our breast imaging patients,” said Becton. “It is the most widely used digital mammography system in the world, and we’re one of the few facilities in the United States to have it.”

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 54 and the second-leading cause of cancer death in women 55 to 74. In Tennessee, 1,000 women are expected to die from breast cancer this year. Fortunately, 96 percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer free after five years. A breast exam by a doctor should also be part of a yearly health exam for women 40 and older.

Baptist Union City earns quality respiratory care recognition in national program

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals. About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15% of hospitals in the United States, have applied for and received this award.

The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation help ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

To qualify for the recognition, Baptist Union City provided documentation showing it meets the following conditions:
  • All respiratory therapists employed by the hospital to deliver bedside respiratory care services are either legally recognized by the state as qualified to provide respiratory care services or hold the certified respiratory therapist or registered respiratory therapist credential.
  • Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day.
  • Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.
  • A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.

The AARC’s QRCR program was created to address growing concerns among health care leaders and the general public regarding the safety and quality of health care services provided to patients. Hospitals that meet the QRCR requirements provide a level of respiratory care consistent with national standards and guidelines. A list of QRCR hospitals is maintained at the association’s Web site for consumers, YourLungHealth.org.

Respiratory therapists are specially trained health care professionals who work under a physician’s orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS, and other lung or lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of lifesaving response teams charged with handling medical emergencies.

The AARC is a membership organization representing more than 46,000 health professionals involved in respiratory care nationwide.

New television campaign highlights Baptist’s benefits
This summer, Baptist colleagues and the communities we serve will learn more about the benefits of a health plan that includes access to Baptist, as the organization launches a new television, radio, print and Web campaign on area media outlets.

The campaign’s theme is “The Benefit of Baptist,” and its elements explore various benefits for consumers who choose Baptist. Focusing on Baptist’s unique offerings such as the Baptist Women’s Hospital and the Baptist Heart Institute, the campaign’s elements also remind consumers and health care decision makers about Baptist’s Mid-South network of emergency rooms and the many free, convenient resources offered through the Her Baptist program, among others.

The TV spots emphasize what a smart choice Baptist’s network is for people who want comprehensive, quality health coverage for themselves, their families and their employees.

“We’re excited about our new ‘Benefit of Baptist’ campaign because it lets our communities know more about what differentiates Baptist from our competitors,” said Scott Fountain, senior vice president and chief development officer for Baptist Memorial Health Care. “Employers know providing excellent health benefits for their employees makes their business stronger, so we wanted this campaign to clearly show why Baptist is a top-notch choice. We are the only area health care system offering many of the services and technologies the campaign highlights, and it’s important for patients and their employers to know that. Of course, the biggest benefit we offer patients is our dedicated colleagues who make a difference in the lives of patients each day.”

Baptist’s tagline will continue to be “Smart Medicine, Inspired Care,” and this new campaign will provide examples of the benefits that deliver on that promise.

Watch for the many benefits of Baptist—coming soon to a station near you.
