Hospital gowns go high tech at Baptist Union City
For more than 50 years, patient modesty has been a concern with traditional hospital gowns.
For already anxious patients, the traditional gowns did little to cover or provide warmth, leaving patients exposed and cold.
Now, Bair Paws, a new high-tech hospital gown, is not only covering surgery patients at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City, but providing warmth, too.
Made of soft, thick material, the single-use Bair Paws gown offers full wraparound coverage and connects to the system’s warming unit through a small house. The warming unit blows warm air into the gown’s specialized air channels with tiny perforations. Using a handheld controller, patients are able to adjust the temperature based on personal preference.
The adjustable warmth the system provides not only gives comfort to patients, it offers clinical benefits such as the prevention of unintended hypothermia in surgical procedures.
“We have received great feedback from our patients regarding the new Bair Paws gowns,” said Derick Ziegler, administrator and CEO of Baptist Union City. “We are pleased to offer this innovative technology to our patients.”

Baptist Union City offers CRASH Course camp opportunity to high school students
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City is giving current high school students the chance to participate in CRASH Course, a summer day camp that will teach them about different areas of the health care industry.
Nurse Camp, which focuses primarily on the field of nursing, is open to students who have completed their freshman, sophomore or junior year of high school. During the camp, students will learn about the educational requirements, skills, typical job duties and personal qualities of nurses. They will also participate in interactive, hands-on activities that highlight the skills, equipment, technology and resources used by nurses and other health care professionals.
“The goal of Nurse Camp is to promote the nursing profession to young people so they can select appropriate high school course work and can begin setting goals for their future careers,” said James Caldwell, chief nursing officer for Baptist Union City.
The application process includes an application, short essay, a counselor recommendation and a teacher recommendation. Students interested in completing the application should contact their school’s guidance counselors. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 10. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of guidance counselors, University of Tennessee-Martin faculty and staff from Baptist Union City.
For more information, please call Caldwell at 731-884-8619 or visit www.crashcoursecamp.com.
