The Cancer Care Center features visual therapy, or artwork designed to lift patients' spirits while they undergo treatment. Pieces of art are built into the ceilings of the treatment rooms and other areas of the center.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City has joined with Radiation Oncology Associates, headquartered in Jackson, Tenn., to create the Cancer Care Center of Union City. The 13,000-square-foot facility combines some of the most sophisticated equipment available with experienced physicians, nurses, therapists and other health care professionals. Among the technology used at the center is a CT simulator, a 3-D treatment planning system and a high performance, computer-driven linear accelerator. A separate entrance for the center provides convenient access for patients and visitors.
Among the most advanced treatments available at the center is intensity modulated radiation therapy. Using precisely shaped beams from a linear accelerator, this therapy allows clinicians to carefully target tumor cells without harming surrounding tissue. IMRT significantly increases the amount of radiation given to the tumor and decreases the amount given to noncancerous areas, which increases the likelihood of completely destroying the cancer while reducing both the side effects during treatment and the chances for complications after radiation therapy. IMRT is used to treat patients with a variety of cancers, including head and neck, breast, brain, lung and prostate.
Baptist Union City has offered cancer services since 1989, and Dr. William D. Permenter Jr., founder and medical director of Radiation Oncology Associates, has been providing radiation oncology services in Union City for about 20 years.
