The 40-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women is where we treat babies who are born premature or have complications, such as heart defects or underdeveloped lungs. The more than 600 babies born in the unit a year represent about 10 percent of the babies born at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women. Some of the babies in the unit are born as early as 23 weeks, which is more than three months premature. Babies born this early weigh only about 1 pound, which is equivalent to about four sticks of butter. The staff is thoroughly trained and experienced; most have worked in the unit for more than 13 years. Often parents need training on how to provide infant CPR, administer medication and operate monitors and specialized equipment before their babies can go home. The continuing care unit, which is a step down from the ICU, is where most parents receive this additional training before their babies go home. This part of the unit looks more like a home nursery and has partitions to provide parents more privacy. The Baptist Women’s Hospital also has two Newborn ICU sleep rooms for parents. That way they can be near their babies during critical times or they can get practice caring for their babies before going home. Every year, Baptist holds an annual Newborn ICU reunion for kids that have graduated from the Newborn ICU. Contributions are especially important for this unit because many of the parents with babies here cannot afford the highly specialized care. In fact, about 30 percent of these patients are charity care, Medicaid or TennCare patients.
