Start Preparing For Next School Year

Daily Bread
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Romans 12:15

It’s not too early to start preparing for the 2005-2006 school year!

Schools require certain documents before children can enroll, as well as a current immunization and health records. And there are many things parents can do prepare their children to begin school.

Most Mid-South area schools begin their fall semesters in August.

The documents parents must bring to school registration include:
  • Evidence of a physical examination.
  • An immunization record from the child’s physician indicating the child has completed routine childhood immunizations. For more information about required immunization schedules, visit National Network for Immunization Information
  • The child’s Social Security card.
  • The child’s birth certificate (certified copy with a seal).
  • For public schools, proof of residence or approved transfer.

It’s also important that parents work with their children to help them make the transition from summer break to school.

Get ready for school to-do list:

  • Get a head start. For physicals and immunization records, schedule an appointment with your child’s physician early as it can be hard to get an appointment the closer it gets to school registration time. County health departments can also provide these services.
  • Prepare for special health needs. If your child has any special health care needs, contact the school nurse or the principal at your child’s school before school begins.
  • Make that transition. As the first day of school nears, schedule bedtimes and wake times that are in line with school hours.
  • Talk it out. The first day of school is a mixture of excitement and apprehension, especially for kindergartners and other students new to the school. Talk with your child about his feelings. Check out books at the library about the first day of school. Share stories about your first day at school.

Good preparation will pave the way for a successful school year. Cherish this special time in your child’s life. It only happens once!
