How much do you know about your heart?
Here is some information about that oh-so-important organ.
- Cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined and over 500,000 women will lose theirs lives to stroke and heart attack this year.
- Cardiovascular diseases are also the leading killer of men.
- The average sedentary adult's heart pumps 2 ounces of blood with each beat,
which is about 10 pints per minute or 2,500-3,000 gallons a day. In
comparison, a top athlete's heart processes 7 ounces with each beat.
- Your body has some 60,000 miles of blood vessels.
- Your heart beats over 2.3 billion times in a lifetime resting little more than a second at a time.
- Genetics play a significant roll in whether you'll get heart disease at an early age. Talk with your parents and grandparents about your family's health history.
- 75% of all heart attacks occur at home. Learn CPR.
Obviously, there may be factors beyond your control, such as a
family history of heart disease, but the most profound factors
affecting heart health are those that are within your control. Daily
attention to a healthy lifestyle includes a nutritious diet, moderate
exercise, managing stress and getting regular checkups and will be
influential factors in determining your heart health.
