Flu Q&A 2004

Daily Bread
Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD from the heavens, praise him in the heights above. Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Psalm 148:1-3

Should I be concerned or worried about the shortage of flu vaccine this year?
That’s a good question. Under normal circumstances, all healthy adults, with a few exceptions, are encouraged to get a flu shot. Though the shot is highly effective, because of this year’s flu vaccine shortage, the CDC is recommending other preventive measures, such as hand washing, getting lots of rest and avoiding contact with people who have the flu or flu-like symptoms.

Who will be able to get the flu shot this year?
That’s an important question. The flu vaccine shortage is an issue hospitals and health care organizations around the nation are facing. The CDC recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 2 and 64 forgo a flu shot this year, so those in high-risk groups can get a vaccination. At Baptist, we are reserving flu shots for our staff members who have direct patient contact and inpatients who are considered high-risk according to the CDC’s guidelines.

What groups are considered at high risk for getting the flu?
According to the CDC, high-risk groups include:

  • All children 6 to 23 months
  • Anyone 2-64 years old with underlying medical conditions
  • Women who are going to be pregnant during the flu season
  • Nursing home and long-term care facilities
  • Health care workers involved in direct patient care
  • Children 6 months to 18 years old on chronic aspirin therapy
  • Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children 6 months and younger.

Can I come to Baptist to get a flu shot?
Because of this year’s flu vaccine shortage, Baptist is reserving flu shots for our staff members who have direct patient contact and inpatients who are considered high-risk according to the CDC’s guidelines. However, we will continue to re-evaluate our flu vaccine supply and make adjustments if needed. Please check the Baptist Web site frequently for updated information about the flu, as well as tips for preventing the flu.

Where can I go to get a flu shot?
We don’t know at this point, but please check the Baptist Web site frequently. We will be posting any information we have about where to get the flu vaccine, if applicable.
