Parents – Guide Your Child to a Healthy Lifestyle

Eating well and being physically active are key to your child’s well-being. Eating too much and exercising too little can cause your child to become overweight. You can take an active role in helping your child and your whole family learn how to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Healthy Eating Habits
Parents play a big role in shaping children’s eating habits. When parents eat a variety of foods that are low in fat and high in fiber, children learn to like these foods, as well. Here are some tips to help your child eat healthy foods:

  • Make sure your child eats breakfast. Breakfast provides children with the energy they need to listen and learn in school.

  • Offer your child a wide variety of foods. Grains, vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy products and lean meat or beans are all great foods for children.

  • Limit the amount of added sugar in your child’s diet.

  • Involve your child in planning and preparing meals. Children may be more willing to eat the dishes they help fix.

  • Eat meals together as a family and eat at the table, not in front of a TV.

  • Keep healthy snacks on hand. Good options include fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables; low-fat cheese; and yogurt or ice cream.

Exercise is Important
Like adults, children should be physically active most days of the week. Experts recommend that children exercise at least 30 minutes a day. As children spend more time in front of the TV and computer, they spend less time being active. Parents need to encourage their children to be active and have fun at the same time.

Be a role model for your children. If they see you being physically active and having fun, they are more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives.

  • Encourage your child to be active every day.

  • Set guidelines for the amount of time your child spends watching television or playing video games.

  • Plan family activities that involve exercise. Instead of watching TV, go hiking or biking, wash the car or take a walk together.
