Collateral Ligament Injury to Knee

The collateral ligaments are located on the sides of each knee. They provide stability for side to side and rotating movements. A bending or twisting force on the knee can damage the collateral ligaments.

Injuries to the collateral ligaments are common in running, jumping and contact sports. People who are overweight or out of shape may have more knee injuries.

Collateral ligament injuries can be sprains or tears of the ligament. Sometimes the cartilage, or lining of the bone, and the meniscus, or cushion in the knee, are damaged when the collateral ligaments are injured.

A mild sprain gives mild pain. Treatment is usually rest and support with an elastic bandage. Ice and anti-inflammatory medication like aspirin or ibuprofen will help with swelling and pain.

A severe sprain or tear is a serious injury. These may need special bracing or surgery.

Symptoms of a serious collateral ligament injury are:
* severe pain at the time of the injury,
* giving away of the knee after the injury.
* swelling and bruising at the knee, and
* locking or catching of the knee joint.

See your heath care provider if you have knee pain that does not go away. It is important to see your doctor for all serious injuries.

The following guidelines will help prevent serious knee injuries.
* Keep in shape. Strong muscles will support your knee.
* Wear proper shoes and knee protection for your sport.
* Warm up before any activity.
