Meniscus Injury to Knee

The meniscus is a special piece of cartilage in the knee located between the thigh and shin bones. It acts like a gasket. Damage to the meniscus is a common knee injury.

An injury to the meniscus is caused by a rotation or twisting stress on the knee. It can happen to any age group. It takes a more forceful injury to injure the knee in younger people. As we get older, the meniscus grows weaker, and tears can occur with a less severe injury.

The most common symptom of a torn meniscus is pain. Usually you will feel as your knee has "given away". If the tear is large enough, your knee will "lock up". A piece of the meniscus can catch in the hinge of your knee and you will not be able to straighten your leg. If this piece unlocks you will be able to move normally right away. There may be swelling, depending on the amount of damage.

Initial treatment is to reduce the swelling and pain. Make an appointment to see your healthcare provider. Meniscus injuries usually do not heal on their own.

Surgery is often required to repair or remove the torn part. This is a minor surgery done with an arthroscope. Small incisions are done in the knee to allow the insertion of tiny surgical instruments and a small camera so the surgeon can see what is happening inside the knee.

In rare cases, you'll be referred to a physical therapist for rehabilitation following surgery. It takes 1 to 2 months to recover. It is very important you follow the advice of your healthcare provider. You can expect full recovery.

The best ways to prevent a knee injury are through:
* strengthening and conditioning,
* warming up before activity,
* using proper knee protection in sports, and
* avoiding exercise on high friction surfaces like concrete.
