Low Cholesterol Diet

If you have a high level of cholesterol (fat in your blood) , you have a higher chance of stroke or heart disease. If your level is too high, you may be able to lower it by reducing the cholesterol and saturated fats that you eat. Cholesterol is found in foods from animals, such as:
* meats, poultry and seafood,
* butter, whole milk and cheese, and
* egg yolks.

The cholesterol in your body is also increased when you eat certain kinds of fats. These kinds of fats usually come from animals and are found in foods such as beef, pork and cheese. If you want to reduce your cholesterol, you should learn about low fat diets also.

Not all animal foods cause problems. Egg yolks and whole milk are high in cholesterol, while egg whites and skim milk are not. The white meat of turkey and chicken is low in cholesterol when eaten without the skin. There are many low fat or skim milk cheeses that are now available. You can continue to enjoy the foods you like if you choose with care.

If you do eat fewer animal foods, you should keep in mind that these foods are important sources of minerals, vitamins and proteins. Foods from plants such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds do not contain cholesterol. You will need to eat a well balanced diet of these to get the essential nutrients you need to stay healthy.
