Rectal Itching

Many people have bouts of itching in the area of the anus. It is most common at night. Itching is usually the only symptom. It usually clears up promptly with treatment. There may be occasional redness. Anal fissures, or thickening of the skin may be noted.

There are many causes of itching. The skin around the anus is relatively thin and sensitive. In children, the most common cause is pinworms. They are rare in adults. A variety of infections or irritants may be the cause. Examples are soaps, colognes, douches, birth control products. Itching could also be due to two skin disorders, psoriasis or seborrhea. Poor hygiene may be at fault. In elderly people, itching may be due to dry and inelastic skin.

Treatment of pinworms in children is with a simple oral drug. During an attack from other causes, hydrocortisone cream is helpful. Sitz baths twice a day with special salt solutions are soothing. You can administer a sitz bath with a basin and tubing that directs warm water over the rectal area. You can buy this type of sitz bath from a drug store Another way to give a sitz bath is to have the person sit in shallow, warm water, gently paddling the water toward the rectal area. One should change underwear daily. Wiping with pads that contain witch hazel, such as Tucks, appears to give relief.

Prevention involves cleaning properly and avoiding irritants. One should bathe daily, but with a mild soap. It is important to resist the urge to scratch, since this worsens the problem. Clean the area with a soft tissue and cool water after bowel movements. Treating constipation with a high fiber diet may help. Some people find that spicy food, coffee, colas, and other foods increase itching. Your laundry detergent may be an irritant, or you may be using too much of it. Loose cotton underwear allows more air contact. Persons sensitive to dyes should use only white underwear. Avoid bubble baths, scented or colored toilet paper, or use of deodorants near the anus if you have rectal itching. Dusting with unscented talcum powder or cornstarch may help.

If you are suffering from persistent rectal itching, consult your healthcare provider.
