One way to prevent or detect early disease is by having periodic health evaluations. The examinations and tests are designed to detect disease and monitor the status of your health. Screening tests can catch a problem at an early, treatable stage. Health care needs vary from person to person, age to age, and situation to situation. Your own healthcare provider will recommend the following steps based upon your needs.
* A review of your family and personal history, to determine the risk for chronic or inherited diseases.
* A fitness check, to include a discussion of hygiene, diet, and exercise.
* A sexual evaluation, which, depending on your age and gender, will check growth and development, risk behaviors, birth control options, and disease prevention.
* A social and mental assessment for abuse, family relationship problems, and personal growth issues.
* A risk check for such things as seat belt and helmet use, sun exposure, housing safety, smoking, drug and alcohol use.
* Vaccination for such things as tetanus and hepatitis.
* Tests such as blood, urine, ECG and mammogram.
* A physical exam (that will include specific examination and testing based on gender and age).
On the review of these findings and your history, treatment or prevention recommendations will be made. How often you will return for care will depend upon your age, health, family history, risk factors, and health conditions.
Remember, to maximize your health, be sure to:
* Eat a well-balanced, low fat and high fiber diet.
* Don't smoke or use illegal drugs.
* If you drink, use alcohol moderately.
* Always use safety devices, such as bike helmets and seat belts.
* Exercise regularly.
