Hearing Loss - Sensorineural

Sensorineural hearing loss is sometimes called "nerve deafness". It is caused by damage to structures in the inner ear. This is where sound waves are transformed into electrical impulses. Neural hearing loss is caused by damage to the nerve that sends these impulses from the inner ear to the brain.

Nerve deafness is permanent. It can be sudden or gradual, mild or profound, and has many causes:
* injury,
* infection,
* drugs, such as streptomycin, diuretics or chemotherapy,
* noise,
* disease, or
* aging.

Most nerve deafness in children is present at birth. This type of hearing loss may be due to such factors as:
* genetics,
* prematurity,
* infection, or
* maternal disease, such as German measles.

When present in adults, this loss is often the result of the natural process of aging, noise exposure, disease or injury. Men tend to experience sensorineural hearing loss a decade earlier than women.

Early identification of children with nerve deafness is important. This will enable them to achieve their maximum potential in school. Identification of adults with this type of hearing loss is critical, as well. Assistive devices may help reduce their sense of isolation, frustration and depression.

If you suspect a hearing loss, contact your healthcare provider. He or she may perform a hearing exam, or may refer to an audiologist for a more comprehensive exam.
