Cardiac Drugs are Special

There are many different types of cardiac (heart) disease, and many different types of medication used to treat them. Cardiac medications can be used to relieve particular symptoms, or they can actually prevent some types of cardiac problems. The types of medications used for heart disease are:
* Medications to reduce or prevent the pain of an angina attack, such as nitroglycerin, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers.
* Medications to lower blood pressure, such as diuretics or water pills, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and other blood vessel relaxers.
* Medications to help regulate the heart rhythm (called antiarrhythmics) such as digoxin, verapamil, quinidine, procainamide, sotalol, amiodarone, propafenone and many others.
* Medications to help prevent the formation of blood clots (anticoagulants) such as aspirin and warfarin (Coumadin).
* Medications to help the pumping action of the heart such as digoxin and the ACE inhibitors (including captopril, enalapril, lisinopril and many others).
* Medications to lower blood lipids (cholesterol and triglyceride) to help prevent future heart attacks.

None of these medicines can cure heart disease that is already present. Nor can they reverse the damage done by many years of high blood pressure and clogged arteries. These medications can help cardiac patients live a longer and higher quality life if taken properly. You may read about new research or new medications in the newspaper or magazines. Make sure you talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this new information. Don't make changes on your own!

Cardiac medications are prescribed to achieve a specific effect, and they may be prescribed in combinations. Most cardiac medicines are very strong and must be taken exactly as prescribed. It may be helpful to make a medication calendar or use a reminder system so that you do not forget to take your medicines. Make sure that you keep all your appointments for blood tests and doctor visits to monitor these medications.

If you have any questions about your cardiac medications, don't wait! Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
