Low Fiber Diet

Low fiber diets were once commonly used to treat a wide range of intestinal disorders. We now know that dietary fiber is an important nutrient for health. Most Americans consume less fiber than their bodies need for optimal function. The recommended intake of dietary fiber, according to the U.S. Dietary Goals is between 25 and 30 grams daily. The average American adult consumes only 10 to 12 grams of fiber each day. Many of us consume a diet high in animal and processed foods which contain little or no fiber.

Where do we find fiber? Fiber is the indigestible portion of plant foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of fiber as are whole grain breads and cereals. Choose brown rice instead of white. Eat a high fiber cereal such as All Bran or Fiber One each morning. Combine it with fruit as well as other cereals for variety. Beans are also an excellent source of fiber and there are many kinds.

The lack of fiber in our diets has contributed to bowel irregularity and bowel diseases such as colon cancer. Americans are one of the largest consumers of laxative and stool softening agents. Most of these products could be eliminated if we would add a little more fiber to our diets. High fiber diets not only promote bowel regularity, they also reduce our risk of breast and colon cancer. Fiber helps to reduce serum cholesterol and blood glucose levels, as well.

Some intestinal disorders require low fiber diets during acute flare-ups. These include:
* acute intestinal inflammation,
* Crohn's disease, or
* acute diverticulitis.

However, the low fiber diet should only be followed for the short term. A normal, higher fiber diet should be resumed once the acute symptoms have subsided.
