Water - Essential for Good Health

Water is a major component of our body mass. Without water the human body can survive only a few days. No other nutrient deficiency has such profound effects. Without water:
* our blood pressure rises,
* our heart begins to malfunction, and
* our kidneys shut down.

Water is found throughout our bodies. It is the major component in blood and urine. Water is found in gastrointestinal juices, perspiration, and even the synovial fluids which surround our joints. Water helps to maintain normal sodium levels in our blood.

The body can store water, but only on a very limited basis. For our body to function optimally we need to replenish daily any water losses, such as urine, stool, perspiration, and respiration.

The average person should consume 8 to 10 eight ounce glasses of water each day or drink to thirst. Although water is the best "thirst-quencher" other liquids such as juices, milk, sodas, teas, etc. can also help meet fluid needs. High sugar and high caffeine beverages can lead to increased urination, and therefore, are not the best choices.

The elderly and young children are at highest risk for water deficit. Any individual who is experiencing prolonged diarrhea, emesis or perspiration is also at risk for water deficiency or dehydration. People in hot climates, particularly extremely dry or humid, can also deplete their water reserves. If you experience muscle cramping, nausea, headache or dizziness these can all be attributed to dehydration.

Be water smart - drink plenty of fluids each and every day!
