Sunburn

Because the ultraviolet rays of the sun are damaging, it is best to protect your skin from sun exposure. Sunbathing is unhealthy. Not only might you get an acute sunburn, but also, years later, early sun exposure will lead to prematurely aged skin and wrinkling. Sun damage may also lead to skin cancers.

People with very light skin, and those who live in the South or Southwest, where the sun is especially intense, are at greater risk for sunburn. To prevent a sunburn:
* Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat.
* Apply sunscreen lotion to exposed skin. Use a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15.
* Be especially careful when on water, sand, or snow. Sunrays can easily reflect off these surfaces, increasing the exposure.

Sunburn causes red, hot and tender skin in the burned areas. In extreme cases, second-degree burns may form blisters. To treat a sunburn:
* Make sure to protect the burned part from the sun.
* Apply cool, wet compresses to help relieve the pain.
* Apply a moisturizing cream, such as Nivea, Eucerin, or Lubriderm.
* Take aspirin for pain relief, and decreased skin inflammation.
* Drink plenty of fluids.
* Avoid over-the-counter topical anesthetics, as they may further irritate the skin.

Call your healthcare provider if blisters, fever, or chills develop. He or she may prescribe medicines for severe cases of sunburn.
