There are more than 20 diseases that may be transmitted through sexual contact. We have a worldwide sexually transmitted disease (also know as STD) epidemic. More than 13 million Americans get an STD each year, with most of the cases occurring among 15 to 24-year olds. If untreated, some STDs can lead to infertility. Others, if untreated, can lead to serious medical problems.
Some people believe that they can tell if someone has an infection with one of these diseases. That is not true. Anyone can get a sexually transmitted disease. It does not only happen to people with many sexual partners.
With all of these infections, partner treatment and medical care is a must. It is a good idea to pay attention to your own body, and watch for the signs of an STD. Health departments, family planning clinics and other healthcare providers can provide the treatment. Most communities have low cost or free STD treatment available. These infections need appropriate treatment, avaliable only by prescription. Home remedies do not work. If you or someone you know thinks they may have an STD, get help right now. The likelihood of becoming infected with a sexually transmitted disease can be decreased by the proper use of latex or plastic condoms.
