It is always tough when parents split up. Divorce is common, but it is still painful. Young adults are hit hard by feelings when parents divorce. Parents sometimes involve the teenager, leaning on them like they are an adult. Teens dealing with divorcing parents feel their own pain. They often feel forced to choose sides, but they love both parents. The pressure of divorce often leaves teens lacking trust in relationships.
Teens dealing with divorcing parents often need someone to talk to. There are counselors and health professionals who can help. Keeping feelings inside does no good. Some young adults shrug it off, thinking it is dumb to be sad. It's OK to feel sad. Things in your life will change because of the divorce. Children and teens are never the cause of a divorce. Most of the time the parents have tried to work it out, and could not do it. So teens should not blame themselves. Teens should not think that they can get their parents back together. Try to talk to both your parents and share your feelings.
Many young adults have had to deal with divorce. Some communities have counseling groups for them. Talk to your religious leader or school counselor if you are having trouble coping with your parent's divorce.
