Vaginitis - Postmenopausal

Many changes occur as women enter menopause. Most of these changes are related to the loss of the female hormone, estrogen. The normal periods stop. The skin of the birth canal, or vagina becomes thin and easily torn. Vaginal lubrication is decreased. These factors combine to make the vagina more susceptible to damage from injury, during sex or by infection as with yeast. Vaginal injury can lead to irritation, discharge, or even bleeding. This condition is called post-menopausal vaginitis.

All women in the menopause can have this problem. Luckily, although vaginitis is common, it is easily treated, even when severe. The longer the skin has been irritated, the longer it will take to treat. So, if you have a question if this is happening to you, see your healthcare provider. An exam is needed to make sure there is no other cause. As long as you are healthy, replacing the missing estrogen by tablet or patch is the main treatment. Estrogen creams may be used, as well. Gentle care of your skin in this area is always suggested but is especially important at this time. If this has been severe or you are unable to take estrogen, skin cleaning baths, such as Aveeno, and drugs for an infection may be needed. It may take a few months for your skin to return to normal. Once the vaginitis is improved, you will need to continue the estrogen to prevent recurrence.

If, after several months of care and estrogen supplementation, the vaginitis does not improve, you must let your health care provider know. There are a few rare problems that can be checked at that time.
