Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 25, 2001 - Baptist Trinity Hospice, 1052 Oakhaven, will host a volunteer training session on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continuing on Monday, Feb. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Baptist Trinity Hospice provides care and services to the terminally ill and their family members. Although cancer remains one of the primary diagnoses for hospice patients, others with terminal illnesses such as AIDS and congestive heart failure receive care in the program, as well.

Hospice volunteers can serve in many ways by offering companionship and providing support to family members. They work behind the scenes by answering phones, making comfort baskets, reading a book to a patient, running errands or just holding a hand.

The upcoming volunteer training will include discussions on understanding hospice philosophy and the hospice team concept; developing communication and listening skills; issues of nutrition, pain control and body mechanics; and spirituality, family relations and grief.

For more information on being a hospice volunteer or to receive an application packet, call Sandra Livesay, Baptist Trinity Hospice volunteer coordinator, at 767-6767.
