Memphis, Tenn., Feb. 6, 2003 - Baptist Memorial Health Care and Goldsmith’s have joined forces to present the second Women’s Heart Sunday event on Feb. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at four Memphis-area Goldsmith’s stores.

Baptist health care professionals will provide free heart disease risk assessments to women in the community at the Goldsmith’s stores in Oak Court Mall, Wolfchase Galleria, Hickory Ridge Mall and Southland Mall. All women who get a heart assessment will receive free gifts. The first Women’s Heart Sunday event was held on Aug. 25, 2002 and attracted almost 500 people.

Women’s Heart Sunday is a part of the Baptist Women’s HeartAdvantage program, which is designed to raise awareness among women that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States and that women’s heart attack symptoms can differ from men’s. In fact, women are more likely to develop and die from heart disease than breast cancer or any of the next 15 leading causes of death in women combined.

Women’s heart attack symptoms can include shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, dizziness, unexplained weakness or fatigue, discomfort or pain between the shoulder blades and unexplained back, neck or jaw pain. Baptist’s Women’s HeartAdvantage program provides women with steps they can take to prevent a heart attack and a guide to discussing heart disease with their physician.

“I think women are becoming more aware of heart disease, and our hope is they are discussing their concerns with their physicians,” said Margaret Smith, cardiovascular services administrator for Baptist Memorial Health Care. “We were very encouraged by the response to our first Women’s Heart Sunday event, and look forward to an even more successful event this February.”
