Memphis, Tenn., April 4, 2005 – Baptist Centers for Cancer Care, located at 50 Humphreys Blvd., will host a free educational seminar titled “Throat Notes” in the center’s conference room on April 26 at 2 p.m.

Mary Simmons, speech language pathologist, will discuss how to care for your throat and voice during cancer treatment. Simmons will teach participants to look for symptoms and be aware of the risks that are involved when going through treatment for head and neck cancer. Dysphagia, or trouble swallowing, and voice changes are two side effects from treatment that cancer patients should be aware of. Surgery and radiation can scar tissue and effect the production of saliva, ultimately leading to difficulty in swallowing food. Participants also will learn about ways to prevent throat problems while going through cancer treatment.

Baptist Centers for Cancer Care is a comprehensive cancer program that provides a complete continuum of care for cancer patients – from diagnosis and treatment to follow-up care. The radiation oncology center opened as the first free standing radiotherapy center in the Midsouth, as well as the first adult cancer genetic counseling and testing program in the area.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling (901) 226-0340. For more information about Baptist, please visit www.baptistonline.org or call (800) 4-BAPTIST.
