MEMPHIS, Tenn., Nov. 5, 2009 — Baptist Trinity Center for Good Grief and Hospice is partnering with Memorial Park Funeral Home and other sponsors to create the first ever Children’s Remembrance Garden; the first planting event will be Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave.
The morning will begin with a gathering inside the funeral home before bulbs are planted in the specially designated area, marked with a plaque.
“The garden gives kids an opportunity to come together with supportive people and remember loved ones who have passed away,” said Angela Hamblen, clinical director of Camp Good Grief programs for Baptist Trinity Center for Good Grief and Hospice. “This program will help children work through their grief.”
The Children’s Remembrance Garden is sponsored by Memorial Park Funeral Home, Pugh’s Florist, Baptist Trinity Hospice’s Camp Good Grief and the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation. The garden will be open year-round, and next spring there will be another event for children involving weeding and cultivating.
In 2005, Baptist opened the Baptist Trinity Center for Good Grief, the first comprehensive grief center for children, teenagers and adults in the region. In addition to Camp Good Grief programs, the center offers individual and group counseling, community education and crisis intervention, all available free of charge because of donors and grants from the community.
