SOUTHAVEN, Miss., March 17, 2010 – Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto recently received the 2010 Hospital of the Year (100 beds or more) award from the Mississippi Nurses Association.

The award was presented at the Nightingale Awards ceremony held on March 1, in Jackson, Miss. The Nightingale Awards honor exceptional service in the nursing and health care industry in Mississippi.

“The nurses at Baptist DeSoto are committed to quality and excellence in patient care,” said Mary Townsend-Gervis, chief nursing officer for Baptist DeSoto. “The leadership team and staff create an environment for excellence in all domains of nursing – education, practice, leadership and research. They truly carry out Baptist’s mission of healing, preaching and teaching through their daily service.”

Baptist DeSoto is a 339-bed hospital that offers diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. In 2001, the hospital completed an expansion project that nearly doubled its size, expanded its labor and delivery services and added open-heart surgery and radiation therapy. In April 2001, the Baptist DeSoto Outpatient Diagnostic Center and Women’s Center opened, which houses DeSoto County’s first open MRI, mammography services and other diagnostic tools. In November 2006, Baptist DeSoto opened a new, 11-story tower, featuring all-private rooms, expanded operating suites and a new emergency room.
