Are You A Compulsive Spender?
To help assess whether or not you have some of the traits of a compulsive spender, read over the statements below and check those statements that apply to you.
- It takes 20% or more of my income to pay my debts.
- I spend when I am depressed and / or angry.
- I am nearing or at the limit on lines of credit.
- I make only minimum payment on revolving charges and loans.
- I am charging food / groceries because I lack cash.
- I frequently pay late charges on bills.
- I tap into my savings to pay current bills.
- I have an insufficient or non-existent savings cushion.
- I would be in immediate financial difficulty if I lost my job.
- I am being threatened with repossession or having earnings garnished.
- I work overtime to make ends meet.
- I have no idea how much I owe.
- I worry about money a lot and feel hopeless and depressed.
If you have checked five or more of the statements, you may have a spending problem and may find it helpful to look at why you are spending the money. If you feel that low self-esteem may be at the root of your problem, as in many compulsive disorders, a professional counselor may be the answer.
