Baptist Memorial Health Care, an integrated system of hospitals and ancillary patient-care settings, offers an exciting environment for progressive post-graduate pharmacy training in a program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
As members of the Department of Pharmacy Services, residents have the opportunity to provide a wide range of advanced clinical services, including patient-specific pharmacotherapy, clinical consultation (including pharmacokinetics), and provision of drug information to patients and health care professionals. The program provides structured opportunities for independent learning through various clinical rotations.
The opportunity to practice in an integrated health care delivery system that provides exposure to both private and academic medicine is a particular advantage of this residency program. Residents' specific interests and needs will be used in developing individual programs. As part of this program, residents will:
- Gain experience in direct patient care and practice management
- Participate in the administration of pharmaceutical care
- Learn about medication use management through membership in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, as well as other focus groups
- Complete an original project that contributes to the advancement of pharmaceutical care and present it at the Southeastern Residency Conference for pharmacy residents
- Have extensive opportunities for teaching and student precepting

Training Sites
The Memphis health care community is one of the largest and most diversified in the nation, with eight major hospitals providing world-class care. For example, the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy is ranked 12th in the nation among "America's Best Colleges for Pharmacy" by U.S. News and World Report. The Baptist pharmacy residency program is affiliated with the medical/surgical training programs at the University of Tennessee-Memphis.
There are five Baptist hospitals in the Memphis Metro area--Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, Baptist Memorial Restorative Care Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville and Baptist Rehabilitation Hospital-Germantown. Baptist Memphis and the Baptist Women's Hospital provide comprehensive inpatient services and serve as tertiary referral centers for Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. In addition to general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, neonatology and obstetrical services, an extensive array of medical specialties are represented. Specialty services include intensive care, cardiology, neurosurgery and oncology.
Baptist's Department of Pharmacy Services uses integrated technology for medication distribution to allow pharmacists a more patient-focused practice. In addition to the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, the department provides institutional and clinical training for pharmacy students from the University of Tennessee and the University of Mississippi.
